TOKYO: Two Russian fighter jets violated Japanese airspace on Thursday as Tokyo scrambled its own planes in response, the defence ministry said, reportedly the first such incident in five years. The Russian planes were detected off the coast of northernmost Hokkaido island for just over a minute, shortly after Japan's new prime minister said he wants to find a "mutually acceptable solution" to a decades-old territorial row between the countries. The man accused of opening fire and shooting a security guard at the conservative Family Research Council headquarters last August plead guilty to three charges in a D.C. federal court Wednesday. Floyd Lee Corkins, II of Herndon, Virginia entered guilty pleas to a federal weapons charge as well as a local terrorism charge and a charge of assault with intent to kill, according to news reports. The Washington Post reports that, according to the plea agreement Corkins signed, he told FBI agents on the day of the shooting that he “intended to kill as many people as possible” and planned to “smother Chick-fil-A sandwiches in their faces.” Investigators found additional magazines and 15 Chick-fil-A sandwiches in his backpack on the day of the shooting. Leave it to the federal government to issue an 80-page document that could have been summed up in two words: nothing’s changed. Yesterday, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) had tipped off news outlets that it was set to offer an olive branch to religious groups on its abortion, contraception, and sterilization mandate. The compromise, HHS promised, would alleviate the concerns of organizations like Catholic Charities, hospitals, or colleges who are forced to provide life-destroying drugs against their will–or pay the price. Turns out, the “new” HHS guidelines are virtually identical to the old ones, with a very slight change in how the accounting is done for pills or procedures that faith-based groups object to. As most of us expected, HHS did not expand the exemptions for the mandate beyond churches, meaning that religious nonprofits like FRC and companies like Hobby Lobby would still have to choose between their principles and their prosperity. Thousands of Palestinian schoolchildren have been receiving military training in the Gaza Strip to prepare them for jihad against Israel. According to Mohamed Siam, a senior official with the Hamas-run ministry, some 9,000 high school children have already joined 36 camps throughout the Gaza Strip and are being taught how to use various types of weapons and handle explosives. Hamas says that the purpose of the camps is to prepare Palestinian children, both militarily and psychologically, for the “liberation of Palestine, from the Jordan] river to the [Mediterranean] sea,” in other words, all of Israel. How can anyone talk about the two-state solution when thousands of Palestinian children are being trained to use weapons and explosives to replace Israel with an Islamic state? Does Mahmoud Abbas really believe that these schoolchildren will ever accept his strategy of peace with Israel? These are questions the West needs to ask itself before once again pressing for a two-state solution.
